Description
Stator hollow conductor is normally made of oxygen free copper with different mechanical property, and some generator require higher tensile and yield strength. While rotor conductors are often made of silver copper, and the addition of silver to pure copper raises its softening temperature considerably with very little effect on electrical conductivity. Silver also improves the mechanical properties, especially the creep resistance. Surprisingly, as little as 0.08-0.12% of silver gives very good resistance to creep, and therefore, this type of copper alloy is very suitable for highly stressed rotor windings. Another benefit of silver copper alloy is that it can be joined with all welding and brazing solutions, and it is suitable for production solution requiring excellent formability. Copper and Copper Alloy Materials
Fabmann can supply different materials for different applications, particularly for power generation sector, and the following is a popular copper and copper alloys used for different parts for generators.
- 1. Oxygen free copper grades such as CW008A (C10200) and CW009A (CW10100), CW009A has maximum oxygen content 5PPM and copper content greater than 99.99%.
- 2. Copper-silver offers electrical and mechanical characteristics similar to those of ETP copper, but has better thermal stability. Therefore, copper silver alloy is widely used in highly stressed rotor windings.
- 3. Copper-nickel silicon alloy (CuNi2Si, CW111C) has an unique chemical and mechanical characteristics, and it has excellent corrosion resistance meanwhile being free from the effects of stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.
- 4. Chromium zirconium copper (CuCrZr) is a precipitation hardening alloy for high temperature applications such as damper bar, short ring, end ring and rotor conductor where the copper alloy needs to have a combination of high electrical and thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. These special properties of this copper alloy are obtained through thermomechanical treatment which typically consists of solutions such as annealing followed by rapid quenching to water bath, cold working aging at 400-450°C and cold working to final dimensions. The metallographical structure of zirconium copper consists of finely dispersed Cu5Zr and pure chromium precipitates which develop during the aging treatment which is essential to achieve high resistance against softening at elevated temperature and high electrical conductivity.
- 5. Zirconium copper (CuZr) is a precipitation hardening alloy for high temperature applications such as rotor parts of turbogenerator where the copper alloy needs to have a combination of high electrical and thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. This good mechanical and electrical properties are obtained through thermomechanical treatment consisting of production processes such as solution annealing followed by rapid quenching to water bath, cold working, aging at 400-450°C and cold working to final dimensions. The final metallographical structure of zirconium copper consists of finely dispersed Cu5Zr precipitates which develop during the aging treatment.
- 6. Nickel silicon copper (CuNi2Si ) is preferred copper alloy in high temperature industrial applications, and it consists of a mixture of elements such as copper, nickel, silicon and chromium. This material has properties such as high temperature resistance, excellent corrosion resistance and low coefficient of thermal expansion, high strength and hardness, and therefore it is an ideal option for medical sector, electronic, power generation and electrotechnical applications. CuNi2Si provides good corrosion resistance in natural environment. Under atmospheric conditions CuNi2Si forms a protective oxide layer having a dark coloring, and its fully hardened condition has a reasonable persistence against stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Please be reminded that this alloy has risk of corrosion cracking (SCC) in the presence of oxidizing acids or wet sulphur.
