Compared to copper, aluminum hollow conductor has higher electrical resistance but cheaper and lighter, and it also has small skin effect coefficient while being conductive to increase corona starting voltage. Proper grounding, insulation, and protection from corrosion is important when using aluminum hollow conductors due to the risk of electrolytic corrosion. Aluminum is a popular choice for conductors due to its high electrical conductivity, second only to copper among commonly used metals, and aluminum offers advantages such as corrosion resistance, affordability, and ease of fabrication. Aluminum hollow conductors are lightweight yet conductive, and that's why they are widely used for substation bus and short length bus. It's worth noting that aluminum has a lower conductivity compared to copper, meaning that for certain high-performance applications, copper may be preferred. However, aluminum's lightweight nature and cost-effectiveness make it a viable choice in many scenarios, especially when weight reduction is a priority. What material are used for hollow aluminum conductors?

 

Since conductivity is vital for hollow conductors, and it decides that the purity of aluminum material is the single most important factor, and therefore high purity aluminum grades are:

 

√ 1050, it is a versatile and cost-effective material with excellent electrical conductivity, good formability, and high corrosion resistance, and it has following properties:

 

◇ Chemical composition, minimum of 99.5% aluminum and a maximum of 0.5% impurities, primarily iron and silicon.

◇ Electrical conductivity: approximately 61% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard), which is about 61% of the conductivity of oxygen free copper grade like CW008A/C10200.

    This makes it a suitable material for electrical conductors, including hollow conductors.

◇ Formability: excellent formability, allowing it to be easily bent, drawn, or rolled into complex shapes. This makes it suitable for applications where the conductor needs to be formed into

    specific geometries.

◇ Corrosion resistance: it forms a protective oxide layer that makes it highly resistant to corrosion in most environments. It is particularly resistant to atmospheric corrosion, making it

    suitable for outdoor applications.

◇ Mechanical properties: minimum tensile strength 70 MPa, yield strength above 20 MPa.

 

√ 1070, it is a commercially pure aluminum alloy with slightly higher strength and lower conductivity compared to 1050 aluminum. It offers a balance of electrical conductivity, formability, and

    strength, making it a suitable option for specific hollow conductor applications, and it has following properties:

 

◇ Chemical composition: minimum of 99.7% aluminum and a maximum of 0.3% impurities, primarily iron and silicon.

◇ Electrical conductivity: approximately 58% IACS, slightly lower than 1050 aluminum's 61% IACS. This difference in conductivity is due to the slightly higher impurity content in 1070

    aluminum.

◇ Formability: slightly less than 1050 aluminum due to its higher strength. It can still be bent, drawn, or rolled into complex shapes, but may require more force or specialized techniques.

◇ Corrosion resistance: it forms a protective oxide layer, providing excellent corrosion resistance similar to 1050 aluminum. It is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and suitable for outdoor

    applications.

◇ Mechanical properties: a minimum tensile strength 70 MPa and minimum yield strength 20MPa.

◇ 1070 aluminum is typically slightly more expensive than 1050 aluminum due to its higher purity requirements.
