For example, our standard WR-62 waveguide operates in the frequency range of 12.4 to 18 GHz, and the insertion loss does not exceed 0.15dB for a typical 90-degree-twist. Why waveguide twist is used?
In satcom application, the waveguide twist is used to align the transmitting signal with the receiving antenna to avoid the signal attenuation caused by the polarization mismatch, and in certain radar systems, inaccurate polarization direction can affect the signal efficiency by 18% or even more. In addition to polarization adjustment, waveguide twist is also widely used to solve the problem of space constraints, plus, in a high-frequency medical imaging device, the waveguide needs to bypass few components for transmission, and the path of the signal can be flexibly adjusted by twisting the waveguide without losing the quality of the signal.
Why high precision twist is important?
For lower frequencies, the effect of twist is not obvious. Yet, while in millimeter wave frequencies (high frequency bands), any change in polarization direction will significantly affect the propagation quality of the signal. For example, a small deviation in polarization angle can cause signal attenuation up to 3 dB, which is almost 50% reduction in signal strength. If a complete inversion is required, e.g. for phasing requirements, the overall inversion or 180° twist should be undertaken over a four wavelength distance.
