Rectangular waveguide tubing is the earliest waveguiding structure utilized for transporting signals due to its low attenuation, excellent mode stability, and it's used for guiding sound waves, electromagnetic waves and radio waves with minimal loss by restricting the transmission of energy to one direction. Usually, the broader dimension of the rectangular waveguide is represented by 'a' (x-direction) and the breadth is represented by 'b' (y-direction). The rectangular waveguide tubing supports TM and TE modes but not TEM waves becausen it's difficult to define a unique voltage since there is only one conductor in a rectangular waveguide. The choice of materials depends upon its application and working enviornment, and popular materials are stainelss steel, copper, oxygen free copper, bronze, brass and aluminium.

Material Options
The selection of material for rectangular waveguide tubing is primarily based upon the specific application requirements. For instance, copper and siver plated copper material is often chosen for low transmissio loss. While, aluminum is a better choice when weight, cost, and corrosion resistance are important considerations. Compared wiht copper, brass and bronze are the better choices when cost, strength and corrosion resistance are required. If cost is a major concern, then aluminum or brass may be a better option. Below is the summary of popular materials used for rectangular waveguide tubing:
- √ Copper, usually Electrolytic-Tough-Pitch (ETP) copper is choosen as it is a good conductor of electricity and has low losses at low frequencies.
- √ Oxygen free copper, CW009A/C10100 is choosen for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) applications because this copper grade is highly malleable, consistent, excelling in electrical & thermal conductivity meanwhile immune to hydrogen embrittlement (HE).
- √ Brass, a less expensive alternative to copper.
- √ Aluminum, 6061 T6 & 6063 T5 are popular options, it is a lightweight and cheaper material, but it has higher transmission losses than copper or brass.
- √ Silver plating, it offers an improved conductivity.
- √ Gold plating, it offers the highest conductivity, and of course it is the most expensive option.
- √ Stainless steel, a durable and corrosion-resistant material, but it has higher losses.
- √ Dielectric materials, such as Teflon and polyethylene, can be used for low-power applications.
